Descrizione: By 1916 the Artists Rifles was not a serving battalion but a holding unit for officer trainees. A group of trainees is shown drilling on a parade ground, probably at Montreuil, and being addressed by its commanding officer. The battalion acts as the guard of honour for the visit of General Cadorna, the Italian C-in-C, to Douglas Haig in March 1916. The battalion training course shows recruits how to tie knots, construct a log bridge over a stream, make a raft from a gas cape stuffed with straw, and punt this down a river. A transport bus carrying soldiers (of the battalion ?) passes through a village, rounding the corner of the road at the top of a hill.
The Artists Rifles, or 1/28th (County of London) Battalion, the London Regiment, in France 1916-1917.
